President Trump had plans to expand the U.S.’s nuclear arsenal. This request had shocked the military officials, especially Rex Tillerson who was appalled by Trump’s desire and prompted him to call the Trump as ‘moron’
During a meeting with top military officials, Trump noted that he wanted to made a big change on U.S.’s nuclear arsenal, by expanding the country’s nuclear capabilities. According to NBC News, the President’s plan comes after seeing the report which shows that U.S. weapons stockpile are decreasing over the past 50 years.
The president’s reaction on U.S. weapon, have shocked the millitary officials- including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was overheard calling Trump a “moron” shortly after the meeting adjourned.
The Federation of American Scientists says that United States currently has 4,000 nuclear warheads. Allegedly, the President wanted U.S to have 32,000 nuclear warheads, like the country once had in the late 1960s.
The officials said that they have tried to convince the president that such expansion its not the country’s best interest, which would violate existing treaties and weapons agreements. This cames in the wake of the huge tensions between North Korea and United States, and while Trump is seting up to decertify the landmark Iran nuclear deal.
According to NBC News’ post, two official noted that President Trump also asks for additional U.S. troops and military equipment.
The Pentagon currently works in effort to modernize the country’s arsenal within the parameters of nuclear treaties. The Nuclear Posture Review is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Presiden Trump prior his entrance in the White House suggested that United States “must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability.”
“The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes,” the President wrote on Twitter last year in December.
